NEWS: VIP visit to National Gallery

The National Gallery of Australia’s Monet: Impresionist Sunrise exhibition features important works from the impressionist master includes paintings from the Musée Marmottan, most especially the 1872 work Impression, Sunrise that coined the name of the popular art movement. Given the name of the painting (and the exhibition) we love the gallery’s Sunrise innovation. Luckily you don’t really have to get up at dawn, merely arrive at the gallery an hour before it opens to the general public. For a Premium ticket to the exhibition you get the paintings to yourself (except for scattering of other VIP ticket holders).  Premium tickets are about twice the cost of general admission but make the experience ten times as special.  TLTB sat and took in the beauty of that glowing Sunrise with no interruptions and communed with Monet’s famous water lilies without a ripple of a crowd to ruin the experience.  Once you are there visit the new Contemporary Worlds:Indonesia exhibition  – food for much thought on the state of Asia. nga.gov.au


NEWS AirBnB Luxe launches today

Eleven years ago the  AirBnB founders inflated three airbeds in the living room of their San Francisco apartment and Airbnb was born. Now the company has come of age. NEWS The Goring Hotel's new restaurant

THE Goring Hotel, Belgravia has opened its first new restaurant in 109 years – and as you'd expect from owner Jeremy Goring, it’s impressive.  The new, Siren restaurant, is headed up by seafood supremo, Nathan Outlaw. Outlaw’s cooking has earned him Michelin stars at his establishments in Port Isaac, Cornwall; Restaurant Nathan Outlaw and Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen, so we have high hopes. With fish shipped straight from trusted Cornwall suppliers, dishes will include: Cuttlefish black pudding, apple and kohlrabi and red mullet with devilled shrimp butter and chicory. As if the siren song of Outlaw’s food wasn’t enough the restaurant is set in a light-drenched, conservatory-style dining room, designed by Russell Sage with windows overlooking the garden ( part of a multimillion-pound refurbishment of the hotel). The Goring’s bar has also been reworked by Sage and new cocktails honouring the transformation include The Madness of King George (whisky and apple) and Garden Gimlet, a floral take on the classic.

NEWS Relais & Chateaux supports #WorldOceanDay

Relais & Châteaux will mark World Oceans Day on (June 8) with a ‘Fish Unknown’. Theme. Described as “a symphony of the sea’s biodiversity”, Fish Unknown will highlight underappreciated, lesser-known species on Relais & Châteaux chefs’ menus.  The chefs striv  to source to sustainable seafood year-round, but this is a chance to heighten the public’s awareness of species that are abundant and underutilized and delicious,  in an effort to stop overfishing those that are threatened and endangered.  In partnership with Ethic Ocean, 200  Relais & Châteaux chefs will hero wild species as well as sustainably farmed species that some diners may not have ever eaten before. Chef Olivier Roellinger, Vice President of Relais & Châteaux, says: “Through a creative culinary approach, lesser-known species can become more fashionable – allowing the overfished to have a break and regain stock levels, and the underutilized to find a voice in top restaurants. Fishes are mainly consumed at restaurants: 55% in the US, 45% in the United Kingdom, 30% in France and 25% in Spain.  This means that chefs’ choices make a considerable impact on the preservation of marine biodiversity.”

Our oceans are overfished by 31%, 60% is fully fished (Food & Agriculture Organization), so sensitivity in sourcing is urgent. Sustainability means taking into account factors such as seasonality, fish population/stock, environmentally respectful catch/farming methods.

   

NEWS Rocco Forte opens in Rome

We’ve been waiting for this one and finally the day has arrived.  Forte Hotels unveiled their second hotel in Rome yesterday. The 104-room Hotel de la Ville is in a renovated historical 18-century palazzo in the heart of Rome, right atop the Spanish Steps with sweeping views of the Eternal City. Designer Tommaso Ziffer, in collaboration with Olga Polizzi, Director of Design for Rocco Forte Hotels, was inspired by The Grand Tour of the 18th century when English and German nobles collected pieces of art during their cultural journeys to European cities. Ziffer has recreated a contemporary retrospective of The Grand Tour by working with local artisans, recreating the opulence of the 18th century through handmade wallpaper from local designers Rubelli and Dedar, rich Italian fabrics and historic tapestries from Zardi & Zardi.  At the heart of the hotel is the e courtyard, fusing three buildings into one, the courtyard design has been lifted by George Carter, a designer who specializes in creating gardens inspired by the simple geometry of 17th and 18th centuries. To keep within the Grand Tour concept, obelisks and black and gold touches bestow romantic feel. NEWS Magashi Camp’s dedicated to Conservation

The newly opened Wilderness Safaris’ Magashi Camp’s core purpose is to help contribute towards the conservation and sustainable operation of Rwanda’s last protected savannah ecosystem, and to drive sustainable ecotourism in the wildlife-rich Akagera National Park. 
Launched in partnership with African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board, collectively called the Akagera Management Company (AMC), Magashi forms part of Wilderness Safaris’ objective to build sustainable conservation economies in Rwanda and further entrench its commitment to extending sustainable ecotourism in the region by offering an extended high-end ecotourism circuit that goes ‘beyond gorillas’.
Magashi’s primary conservation focus is on threatened species like the rare shoebill stork, listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Wilderness Safaris will also provide monitoring support to Akagera’s black rhino reintroduction project, which will see a new supplementary population of the same subspecies being returned to the park from European zoos later this year. They will also continue to support AMC’s lion research through the sponsorship of satellite collars and regular monitoring.
Like all other Wilderness Safaris camps, Magashi is driven by the company’s 4Cs sustainability ethos of Commerce, Community, Culture and Conservation. One out of three employees of the camp staff were sourced directly from the neighbouring communities and the company intends to hire more local people as it trains and develops its current staff into senior positions. Magashi has also been sourcing local products and handcrafted gifts through community projects.

NEWS Hyatt returns to Queensland

Hyatt announced today plans for the first ever Hyatt hotel in the Brisbane area, marking the return of a Hyatt branded hotel to Queensland. Located in the Woolloongabba suburb, the Hyatt Place hotel is expected to open in 2023 at the internationally award-winning and state-of-the-art $700M million South City Square precinct. NEWS Singapore Airlines and COMO Shambala partner

NEWS Regent Seven Seas' Woman's Day announcement

NEWS Soneva spreads the word on World Book Day

Congratulations to Soneva, who are spreading the word on World Book Day (7th March 2019,) by donating a collection of 100 educational books and classic children’s literature to the Baa Atoll Education Centre and the Bahiyya Pre-School as part of their Blackwell Community Libraries Project. Soneva Fushi’s Barefoot Bookseller will travel across the sea from the resort, in a boat full of books to Eydhafushi, the capital of the Baa Atoll, to celebrate the event with local students and teachers. There will be games, literary workshops, guided reading, and much more as the Barefoot Bookseller installs the selected books, chosen and donated by Ultimate Library.  Through the Ultimate Library Soneva Fushi now has its own Barefoot Bookseller on the island who oversees the book collection. The Bookseller also provides a range of experiences for guests centred around literature. NEWS Rocco Forte's grand expansion plans

Rocco Forte Hotels has announced its fifth new property following the signed agreement to acquire Grand Hotel Villa Igiea, in Palermo, Sicily. This marks a further step in the most ambitious expansion programme in the group’s history, with five new luxury properties due to open within the next two years bringing the Rocco Forte Hotelscollection from 11 to 16 properties.  four of the new properties will be located in Italy and one in China. In China, where the group will be opening the Westbund Hotel in Shanghai in 2019.

NEWS Art at the Summit
Ten years ago, Courchevel and Galeries Bartoux brought art and the mountains together, creating an open-air museum on the ski area. This first - surrealist exhibition was called Art at the summit and saw works by Dali taking over the slopes and the centre of the resort itself: monumental sculptures and original museum works from among the famous pieces created by the artist in the 1980s. Every year since then there has been art on the mountain. Now to celebrate the tenth anniversary, Dali returns to the mountain peaks of Courchevel , Nine works of art will be on show across the ski area and in the centre of the resort itself, huge tarps will be created by 3 contemporary street artists inspired by Dali’s work, and one of the Saulire cable car’s cabins will be totally redesigned. A 10 years of Art at the Summet retrospective exhibition will be held at La Croisette, with guided visits and live après-ski artistic performances throughout the season. NEWS The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort Opens

Westin Hotels & Resorts has announced the opening of the brand’s first hotel in the Republic of Maldives with the opening of The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort. Located on a coral island in the Baa Atoll, which is a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site, the new resort offers guests uninterrupted ocean and stunning turquoise lagoon views.
The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort features 70 villas and suites, 41 on island and 29 overwater. Each villa is shaped with an eco-friendly double roofing to create the perfect natural ventilation. Outdoor rainforest showers are a distinctive feature. Poised over the sea on stilts and with an area of almost 200 square meters each, the overwater suites are among the largest a resort has to offer in the Baa Atoll region.
Led by award-winning Milan-based architects PEIA Associati, the resort’s design takes inspiration from the ocean with a visionary approach towards environmental sustainability. Hotel Amigo, a Rocco Forte Hotel, has partnered with haut les coeurs, a local organic florist and Les Précieuses, a local jewellery maker, to create an unforgettable floral experience for guests. 
Located only steps from Hotel Amigo, the stunning Flower Carpet transforms the famous Grand-Place into a colourful sea of flowers. This year’s theme is devoted to Guanajuato, a Mexican region with an exceptionally rich culture and flower tradition.
Hotel Amigo has partnered with haut les coeurs to create colourful bouquets using organic Belgian flowers that are delivered to guests by bicycle. Additionally, haut les coeurs has created a limited edition collection of handmade floral brooches in collaboration with the jewellery label Les Précieuses. 
From 15th-20th August, guests of Hotel Amigo can book the Floral Experience package and receive a haut les coeurs floral arrangement, a haut les coeurs x Les Précieuses broach in their room upon arrival as well as two tickets to the best seat in Brussels to view the Flower Carpet from the City Hall balcony. NEWS Exciting architecture of the new Morpheus Hotel

Macau has officially opened the doors to Morpheus, a sci-fi 40-storey luxury hotel that boasts the world’s first high-rise exoskeleton (a curvaceous lattice-like covering that gives the building its iconic appearance).s. The exoskeleton optimizes the interiors by creating spaces that are uninterrupted by supporting walls or columns.  Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), the ssinuous structure is the new flagship hotel for the City of Dreams resort and one of the last projects that architect Zaha Hadid worked on before her untimely death. TLTB thinks it is one of the most innotive hotel designs since the Burj Al Arab (Dubai) and more lately The Silo (Capetown) were built.  The buildings'design is inspired by the fluid forms found within china’s rich jade carving traditions.
